About This Product
With both mirrors set to 45°, light entering at the upper window is turned down the tube and then turned again into the eye, giving an upright view over an obstacle. Moving a mirror off 45° lets students trace the resulting skewed rays, and lengthening the tube shows how the field of view narrows, which links the law of reflection to submarine and industrial periscopes. Educational Instrument can dispatch the Periscope STEM Lab to laboratories in Tanzania, Chile, Laos, Sierra Leone, Belgium and Côte d'Ivoire.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why are the periscope mirrors set at 45°?
At 45° each mirror turns the light through 90°, so the two parallel mirrors send the light straight into the eye and the image is upright and aligned.
Why use front-surface mirrors?
The reflective coating is on the front of the glass, which avoids the double reflections, or ghost images, of ordinary mirrors.
